My first Film Industry Blog…
July 26, 2008
At last I’m blogging. I launched FilmIndustryBloggers, with some very good friends whom you can check out here, in February but have been so busy getting the site up and running that there was no time for me to blog. But here I am. Richard Janes. The British Film Director. At last!
So what can you expect from my blog?
Now, lets see… How about:
Life as a Child Actor…
My day filming with Jeremy Irons.
Film School was it really worth it?
The world of making million dollar commercials.
Theater; why all filmmakers should take note.
Shooting my first movie on $1.8M
The heart break of selling my first movie… not for $1.8M… Yet…
Getting on the Hollywood circuit.
Which big Hollywood Agency to sign with?
A Manager, an Agent and an Entertainment Lawyer. That’s 25%!
Screenplay Development. It goes on, and on, and on.
Pitching to Hollywood Studios.
Hollywood tracking boards. The underground key for information.
The difference between studio movies and indies.
The key is the screenplay… And owning all the rights!
Which actor to choose and why?
Well, that should keep us going for the next four months.
You’ll have to forgive me as I sometimes go off on tangents. I also apologize to you all now, especially The Script Reader, who will undoubtedly cringe at my spelling and grammar. I’ve never been very good at that sort of thing - it’s one of the many great things that I love about having a writing partner with my screenplays - they’ll always make sure it’s double and triple checked - alas I do not have that luxury here.
So, in true Reality TV Producer style, what juice bit of information shall I leave you with? How about the idea of hearing how my very first kiss was a disastrous first audition for a tooth paste advert where I nearly signed myself over to the Catholic church and a vow of celibacy? Or perhaps, and a little more suited to this blog, how different directors have such different techniques in approaching filmmaking that being an actor is an amazing way to learn how to be a film director…
THE BRITISH FILM DIRECTOR
July 24, 2008
Richard Janes started in the film industry at the age of 14 working as a child actor for Children’s BBC Dramas. During film school he worked at commercial company @Radical where he got to soak in cinematic masters including Tarsem and Terry Gilliam as they worked on spots for global brands. His graduation film received a Royal Television Society nomination and shortly after he shot his first feature film “FAKERS” which received a US theatrical release in ‘07.
After meeting his wife in Los Angeles Richard relocated to the states where he won a Los Angeles Area Emmy for his pilot “Behind the Lyrics”. He has high hopes for returning to the UK and is currently developing both US and UK projects including a Superhero movie for Disney and a bio pic on legendary leading man Errol Flynn which will go before the lens in spring ’09.
